Good story, quite hard to follow the vernacular at first. About masculinity and men being lost. Not as dystopian as Cormac.
Jackie Clarkson’s mum has died. His dad is a shithead. Jackie comes home one day and finds his dad dead. He takes off into the Western Australia desert.
He’s resourceful, he can survive by shooting kangaroos. He know how to field dress and keep meat edible. He’s fifteen years old. He’s also in love with his cousin.
He comes across an Irish priest, Fintan MacGillis, living on his own by a salt plane. The book is strongest in these parts. When faith and survival are the themes. The ending is a little formulaic. But overall I enjoy this one. Will look out for other books by Winton.
