Music is the universal language. This phrase is a cliche for a reason. I don’t understand a word of this latest single, Vochy, from Dlina Volny. But I understand it is a song about hope, about raging against oppression, and about how fear can cloud out all those things.
Originally from Minsk but now based in London and Warsaw, the trio – Ales Shishlo, Masha Zinevitch, and Vad Mikutski – write dark, disco-infused pop with an air of ‘80s new wave. Vochy is a four-to-the-floor disco tune, overlaid with ethereal, haunted lyrics doused in reverb. I don’t understand a word but the kick into the chorus melody is universal, it doesn’t need language.
Commenting on the track, the band shared: “First released in Russian under the name Glaza, as part of the Long Play Belarus compilation in November 2020, it remains as relevant today as it was then. We’re still living in a constant stream of information, trying not to drown under the weight of lies, hypocrisy, and injustice, clinging to truth, trying to stay afloat.”
