Old bunting lies on Chillerton Road at 7am as I leave the house. “It’s going to be a wonderful day,” a middle-aged woman says to her daughter and her husband outside the Sainsbury’s on Mitcham Road.
‘Prepare To Meet Thy God’ is emblazoned in bold red type on a pale white background on the side of a building heading north out of Euston Station at 0812 on a Monday morning in mid-September.
The sky is light blue fading into white haze, cris-crossed with the vapour of jet planes descending into Heathrow airport.
Annie Dillard wrote about dust, once, and I can’t help but think of her passage: “Earth sifts over things. If you stay still, earth buries you, ready or not.”
Use it all up. Don’t save the good drafts for the future posts. Burn it all out and it regrows.
