When I first heard this song I assumed it was an old B-side from the ‘00s. Maybe an old Duke Spirit song. It has the fuzzed guitar and vocals of landfill indie (and that’s a term I use with love, not disdain).
And it turns out the story behind this song is not far off. Originally written by singer Elmiger for his former post-punk band, Vacation in Spain was intended as a commentary on the hedonistic, predominantly male indie scene of the 2000s. The song was never recorded and had almost been forgotten until a camcorder video of it surfaced.
